Adrine Kobusingye has been elected as the new Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League, signaling a major shift in the party’s women leadership. Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, officially announced Kobusingye’s win on Monday, with the candidate securing a commanding 1,839 votes.
Kobusingye’s victory comes after long-serving Lydia Wanyoto withdrew from the race shortly before voting, unseating a familiar face in the party’s women leadership and paving the way for a generational and strategic change ahead of the 2026 elections. Her closest contender, Faridah Kimbowa, garnered 670 votes with backing from Wanyoto and fellow candidate Kaliisa Kyomukama, who had stepped down and urged her delegates to support Kimbowa. Despite this consolidation, Kobusingye maintained a decisive lead.
The final tally was as follows: Adrine Kobusingye – 1,839 votes; Faridah Kimbowa – 670 votes; Sarah Ochieng – 19 votes; Faridah Nakalawo – 3 votes; Rehema Kyanika – 2 votes; Lydia Wanyoto – withdrew.
Kobusingye’s election cements her as the new face of the NRM Women’s League, a role critical for mobilizing female voters and reinforcing grassroots structures across Uganda. Her ascendancy also raises questions about the future political trajectory of Lydia Wanyoto, a veteran NRM mobilizer who has long been a formidable figure in the party’s women’s politics.
