The African Union (AU) has announced the deployment of a high-level delegation to Madagascar to engage national stakeholders in efforts to restore constitutional order and stability.
This decision follows resolutions made by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) during its 1305th and 1306th meetings on October 14 and 15, 2025, in response to the ongoing political crisis in Madagascar. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, highlighted the importance of “concerted diplomatic efforts” to encourage meaningful dialogue among all Malagasy stakeholders, including the government, political parties, civil society, and youth representatives.
“The African Union emphasizes the urgency of genuine, inclusive dialogue to ensure a peaceful return to constitutional democracy,” Youssouf said. Acting under the good offices of H.E. President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço of Angola, the AU’s appointed mediator, the Commission will immediately deploy the high-level mission to Antananarivo.
The delegation will collaborate closely with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and will include members from the AU Panel of the Wise and a Special Envoy.
The mission's goal is to support the initiation of an inclusive, Malagasy-led, and civilian-driven national dialogue process aimed at rebuilding trust, fostering social cohesion, and ensuring constitutional governance. The AU Chairperson reaffirmed the Union’s solidarity with the people of Madagascar, expressing confidence that national actors will rise above their divisions and prioritize the country’s long-term stability and democratic goals.
“The African Union stands firmly with the people of Madagascar in their pursuit of good governance, democracy, sustainable development, and prosperity,” Youssouf stated, urging all parties to engage in dialogue “in good faith, with a spirit of compromise and national unity.”
Madagascar has experienced recurring political instability in recent years, with tensions among political factions threatening democratic governance. The AU’s intervention seeks to prevent further escalation and guide the nation back toward constitutional normalcy.
