Airtel Money has partnered with international payment provider Juba Express to roll out seamless, low-cost cross-border money transfers directly through the Airtel Money wallet a move expected to ease remittances for millions of Ugandans.
Remittances remain a critical economic pillar for Uganda. The World Bank’s 2024 Migration and Development Brief reports that Sub-Saharan Africa received USD 54 billion in remittances in 2023, with Uganda accounting for USD 1.2 billion. By January 2024, inflows had grown to USD 1.42 billion. These funds help families pay school fees, access healthcare, and fund small businesses across the country.
The new Airtel Money–Juba Express service aims to reduce transfer costs, increase speed, and eliminate the barriers that typically burden international transactions. Users can send money instantly to over 120 countries by dialing *185# → Send Money → International Transfers → Juba Express, benefiting from transparent forex rates and minimal charges.
During the launch, Airtel Money Managing Director Japeth Aritho said the partnership is timely as demand for affordable global financial services grows.
“In an increasingly interconnected world, the need to send money across borders is more critical than ever,” he said. “Whether it’s a parent paying school fees, a family member supporting loved ones, or a business making crucial payments, cross-border transactions remain the lifeblood of our global community. Through this partnership, we are making international transfers faster, safer, and more affordable.”
The service includes key features such as:
- Global Reach: Send money to over 120 countries to any bank account or mobile wallet.
- Affordable Pricing: Low forex rates and transfer fees starting at UGX 120, with up to UGX 5 million transferable per transaction.
- Instant Access: Quick USSD access via *185#.
- Security and Compliance: Fully regulated by the Bank of Uganda and powered by licensed provider Juba Express.
Juba Express representative Sitati Dawo said the collaboration boosts financial access and inclusion across borders.
“Partnering with Airtel Money allows us to extend secure, efficient, and affordable transfers to millions of Ugandans,” he said. “This empowers individuals to support families, run businesses, and tap into global opportunities with confidence.”
Officials emphasized that integrating Juba Express into Airtel Money strengthens Uganda’s position as a regional leader in digital financial innovation. By simplifying cross-border payments, the service ensures that every Ugandan whether in a village or a major city—can participate more fully in the global economy.
