Algeria has made a significant leadership change at the helm of its state-owned energy giant, Sonatrach, by dismissing CEO Rachid Hachichi. The decision, announced without an official explanation, comes amid growing public scrutiny and media criticism of Hachichi’s management since his appointment in October 2023. His tenure was marked by increasing concerns over governance and strategic direction within one of Africa’s most vital energy companies, which plays a central role in Algeria’s economy through its oil and gas exports.

In his place, the government has appointed Noureddine Daoudi, a seasoned expert in the hydrocarbons sector with a strong track record in energy administration. Daoudi previously led the National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources (Alnaft) and held various senior roles across Algeria’s energy institutions. His appointment was formalized during a ceremony overseen by Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab, signaling a renewed push for stability and reform within Sonatrach’s leadership structure.

Sonatrach’s strategic importance to Algeria cannot be overstated—it is the backbone of the country’s export revenues and a key player in its international energy partnerships. Leadership transitions at the company often reflect broader shifts in national policy and economic priorities. The latest reshuffle adds to a series of executive changes in recent years, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to recalibrate the company’s direction amid global energy market fluctuations and domestic pressures for transparency and efficiency.

The appointment of Daoudi is expected to bring a more technocratic and reform-oriented approach to Sonatrach’s operations. As Algeria seeks to modernize its energy sector and attract foreign investment, effective leadership at Sonatrach will be crucial in navigating complex challenges, from global competition to the transition toward cleaner energy sources. This leadership change may also signal a broader intent to reinforce accountability and strategic clarity in one of the country’s most influential institutions.
