Algeria has taken a decisive step toward accelerating its digital transformation by signing a declaration of intent with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The agreement, formalized in Algiers, brings together the High Commissioner for Digitalization, Meriem Benmouloud, and UNDP Resident Representative Natasha van Rijn, in a partnership aimed at fast-tracking the implementation of Algeria’s national digital strategy, “Digital Algeria 2030.” This collaboration underscores Algeria’s commitment to modernizing its digital infrastructure, enhancing public service delivery, and fostering a more inclusive and innovation-driven economy.
The declaration outlines a shared vision to strengthen digital governance, improve institutional capacity, and support the rollout of over 500 digital projects across various sectors. These initiatives are designed to streamline administrative processes, increase transparency, and promote citizen engagement through accessible and efficient digital platforms. By leveraging UNDP’s global expertise and technical support, Algeria aims to align its digital transformation with international best practices and sustainable development goals, ensuring that its digital evolution is both impactful and resilient.
A key focus of the partnership is the development of a robust digital ecosystem that empowers both public institutions and private enterprises. The strategy includes investments in cybersecurity, digital literacy, and infrastructure expansion, all of which are critical to building trust and ensuring the long-term success of digital initiatives. With internet penetration already exceeding 70%, Algeria is well-positioned to scale its digital capabilities and attract investment in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, fintech, and e-governance solutions.
Beyond technology, the agreement reflects a broader ambition to bridge the digital divide and promote equitable access to digital tools and services. By prioritizing inclusivity, the initiative seeks to ensure that all segments of society, regardless of geography, gender, or socioeconomic status, can benefit from the opportunities presented by digital transformation. The partnership with UNDP marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s journey toward a more connected, efficient, and forward-looking society, reinforcing its role as a regional leader in digital innovation.
