Uganda’s most anticipated cue sports event, the 2025 National Pool Open Championship, was officially launched on Wednesday, September 10, in a lively ceremony held in Luzira. Organized by the Pool Association of Uganda (PAU), the tournament is expected to attract over 10,000 players from across the country, culminating in a grand finale at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala.

This year’s edition marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s sports calendar, coming at a time of renewed momentum for competitive pool. The event follows the successful renewal of a two-year sponsorship deal signed in 2024 between PAU and long-time partners. The partnership, which dates back to 2009, was interrupted between 2018 and 2022 due to the pandemic and financial constraints but resumed in 2023 ushering in what PAU officials are calling a “new era” for the sport.

PAU Chairman Bob Trubish described the 2025 National Pool Open as the biggest and most inclusive in the tournament’s history. “We are here today to celebrate the rebirth and continued growth of pool in Uganda,” he said during the launch. “The 2025 National Open is set to be the biggest in our history.”

Trubish also paid tribute to the tournament’s rich legacy, naming past champions who have shaped the sport over the years. These include Mansoor Bwanika (2024, 2018), Caesar Chandiga (2023), Fahad Ssewankambo (2017, 2014), Sula Matovu (2016), Amos Ndyagumanawe (2015), Alfred Gumisiriza (2012), Jonan Turigye (2013, 2010), Khalifan Ntwali (2011), Fred Namanya (2009), Jeff Miiro (2003), and Bob Menani (2001).

“The legacy of these champions inspires us all,” Trubish said. “The 2025 edition is a reflection of our vision to make pool a truly national sport that reaches every corner of Uganda.”

The format of the championship is designed to maximize participation and inclusivity. The men’s qualifiers will start at 320 local centers, progressing through 40 regional hubs. The women’s qualifiers will begin directly at nine regional centers. This competitive structure will determine the top 128 men and 32 women who will advance to the national finals.

Defending champions Mansoor Bwanika and Kisakye Marion are both set to return, and fans are anticipating intense rivalries as new challengers emerge. Winners in both categories will walk away with brand-new cars, along with cash prizes, pool tables, and other rewards, making this one of the most lucrative tournaments in Ugandan sports.

Trubish encouraged players to bring their best to the table and urged fans to support the game at every stage. “To the players, I say: this is your moment to shine. To the fans: follow the journey, support your favorite players, and witness the incredible talent Uganda has to offer. Let’s make this the most memorable championship yet.”

With a growing fan base, increased media attention, and a strong organizational structure in place, the 2025 National Pool Open Championship is not only a sporting contest it’s a celebration of Ugandan talent, resilience, and national pride.
