The attack occurred late Sunday night in the remote village of Gidan Busa, located in Kaduna State. According to witnesses, heavily armed assailants stormed the community, firing indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze. Residents described scenes of terror as families fled into nearby forests to escape the violence.
"They came in large numbers, on motorcycles and with guns. They shot at anyone in sight. I lost two cousins in the attack," said a local resident who requested anonymity for safety reasons.
Local authorities have confirmed the death toll at nine, with over 30 villagers, including women and children, reported missing—believed to have been abducted. The true number may be higher as search efforts continue.
“This is yet another senseless act of violence against innocent Nigerians,” said Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan. “Security operatives have been deployed to the area to pursue the attackers and rescue the abductees.”
The incident marks the latest in a series of escalating attacks by criminal gangs—often referred to as "bandits"—who have plagued rural parts of Nigeria, particularly in the northwest and central regions. These groups are known for mass abductions, killings, and extortion.
President Bola Tinubu's government has vowed to clamp down on the violence, but communities in affected regions say protection remains minimal. The Nigerian military has recently intensified airstrikes and ground operations against the groups, but the attackers continue to exploit the rugged terrain and limited state presence.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised alarms over the worsening insecurity, warning that banditry is creating a humanitarian crisis marked by displacement, trauma, and school closures.
As of Monday afternoon, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack, and rescue operations were still underway.
Authorities have urged residents in neighboring areas to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while families of the abducted wait anxiously for news of their loved ones.
