Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won the Great North Run women’s race, finishing in 1:09:32, with compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot second and Britain’s Eilish McColgan third.
McColgan, competing in her third Great North Run, pushed hard in the final stages but couldn’t catch the Kenyan pair, describing the windy conditions as “tough.”
Kenya’s Alex Mutiso claimed the men’s title in 1:00:52, ahead of Belgium’s Bashir Abdi and defending champion Abel Kipchumba. Ben Connor was the top Briton in fourth.
In the men’s wheelchair race, Britain’s Sean Frame won in 49:24, followed by Simon Lawson and Anton Shepherd, while Mel Nicholls took the women’s wheelchair title in 1:05:24.
At London’s Big Half marathon, Jack Rowe secured a record-equaling third victory in 1:04:08, Jess Warner-Judd triumphed in the women’s race in 1:10:35, David Weir set a course record to win the men’s wheelchair race in 46:58, and Eden Rainbow-Cooper won the women’s wheelchair race in 54:31.
