Côte d’Ivoire is approaching a critical juncture as it prepares for its presidential election on October 25, with growing calls from civil society and international observers to safeguard free expression and ensure a peaceful democratic process. The political climate has become increasingly tense following the exclusion of key opposition leaders from the ballot, prompting widespread concern over the fairness and inclusivity of the election. On August 9, supporters of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI) and the African People's Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PPA-CI) staged protests in Abidjan to denounce the disqualification of their candidates. These demonstrations were met with forceful dispersal by security forces, resulting in the arrest of more than 230 individuals and raising alarms about the government’s commitment to civil liberties.

ARTICLE 19, a global organization dedicated to defending freedom of expression, has urged Ivorian authorities to uphold democratic norms and protect civic space during this pivotal period. The organization emphasized that a credible election cannot take place in an environment where dissent is suppressed and opposition voices are silenced. It called for the government to respect the rights of citizens to express their views, associate freely, and participate in political discourse without fear of retaliation. The crackdown on peaceful protests and the banning of opposition-led demonstrations have cast a shadow over the electoral process, threatening to erode public trust and deepen political divisions.

The situation is further complicated by the opposition’s call for daily protests leading up to the election, many of which have been prohibited by local authorities. These bans have led to clashes in urban centers such as Abidjan, where security forces have used tear gas and mass arrests to quell gatherings. Human rights groups have condemned these actions, warning that they undermine the legitimacy of the electoral process and risk escalating tensions. The suppression of peaceful assembly not only violates international norms but also stifles the democratic spirit that should define an election period.

Meanwhile, the media landscape and digital platforms have become arenas for political polarization and misinformation. Analysts have noted a surge in disinformation campaigns and rumor-mongering online, which complicates efforts to maintain an informed electorate. Civil society leaders are advocating for stronger protections for journalists and responsible use of digital media to ensure accurate reporting and constructive public dialogue. The spread of false narratives threatens to distort public perception and inflame existing divisions, making the need for transparent communication all the more urgent.

With the election date fast approaching, the international community is closely monitoring developments in Côte d’Ivoire. The outcome will not only determine the country’s leadership for the next five years but also serve as a litmus test for the strength of its democratic institutions. Ensuring a safe, inclusive, and transparent electoral process is essential for the nation’s stability and its standing as a democratic beacon in West Africa. The choices made in the coming days will shape the future of Côte d’Ivoire’s governance and its commitment to upholding the rights and freedoms of its citizens.
