Egypt capped off their Group D campaign at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament with a commanding 77–64 victory over Uganda, securing a flawless 3–0 record and a direct ticket to the quarterfinals. The match, held on August 16 at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda in Angola, marked Uganda’s third consecutive defeat, officially ending their run in the competition. Despite flashes of brilliance and a spirited start, the Silverbacks couldn’t sustain their momentum against Egypt’s depth and tactical discipline.
Uganda opened the game with grit and determination, edging the first quarter 18–17 and matching Egypt basket for basket through the second. At halftime, the score stood at a narrow 34–33 in favor of Egypt, reflecting the intensity and balance of the contest. Deng John Geu led Uganda’s charge with a game-high 19 points, showcasing his strength in the paint and relentless energy. Robinson Opong added 14 points, including a crucial three-pointer early in the third quarter, while Naseef Lubowa chipped in 13, helping Uganda stay competitive through the first half.
However, the tide turned dramatically in the third quarter. With the score tied at 36–36, Egypt unleashed an 8–0 run that shifted the momentum irreversibly. Patrick Gardner ignited the surge with a powerful dunk, followed by clutch free throws from Amr El Gendy and sharp scoring from Abdelgawad. Egypt’s transition game, led by Ibrahim Zahran’s fast-break finishes, widened the gap to 55–43 by the end of the quarter. Uganda struggled to recover from this blow, and despite valiant efforts from Geu and Opong in the final stretch, the deficit proved too steep.
Egypt’s balanced offense and composed execution in the fourth quarter sealed the win. El Gendy finished with 17 points, anchoring the team with leadership and timely shooting. Gardner contributed 15, while Mido Taha and Omar Oraby each added 10 points off the bench, underscoring Egypt’s depth and versatility. Their ability to rotate effectively and maintain pressure wore down Uganda’s resistance.
For Uganda, the tournament ends with a 0–3 record, having suffered defeats to DR Congo, Senegal, and Egypt. While the results were disappointing, the Silverbacks showed promise in their opening halves and individual performances. Geu and Opong stood out as consistent contributors, and the team demonstrated flashes of cohesion and resilience. However, issues with depth, turnovers, and second-half execution ultimately undermined their campaign. As the tournament progresses, Egypt moves forward with confidence, while Uganda will look to regroup and build on the lessons learned for future competitions.
