South Africa (Johannesburg) - EThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba has called for immediate action on the long-discussed high-speed rail link connecting Johannesburg and Durban. First proposed over 15 years ago, the project has faced numerous delays and remains unimplemented. Mayor Xaba emphasized the need for swift progress, stating, "We are being accused of developing plans that never see the light of day." He highlighted the importance of the rail link for economic growth and connectivity between the two major cities.
During the launch of the municipality’s Public Transport Information Centre, Mayor Xaba urged stakeholders to prioritize the rail project. He pointed out that discussions about the high-speed rail began in 2010, with former Minister of Transport S’bu Ndebele initiating the conversation. Despite the Cabinet endorsing the project in November 2023 and President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterating its importance in the 2024 State of the Nation Address, tangible progress has been limited.
Mayor Xaba has engaged with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), which has expressed willingness to facilitate the project through blended financing. He emphasized that successful implementation would benefit both Durban and Johannesburg, improving mobility for commuters and tourists alike. The rail link is seen as a means to enhance economic ties and facilitate easier movement between the two cities.
The urgency of the project has been underscored by its inclusion in Transport Month discussions. Mayor Xaba has called on both Johannesburg and eThekwini municipalities to actively drive the initiative forward. He believes that without strong leadership from both cities, the project may continue to face delays. The proposed rail link is viewed as a transformative initiative with the potential to stimulate economic growth, enhance tourism, and foster greater interconnectivity between KwaZulu-Natal and inland provinces.
