France has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Africa’s energy transition by backing a 55-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Togo. Through the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), France has contributed $200,000 to fund feasibility studies for the initiative, which aims to enhance grid stability, improve energy reliability, and accelerate the country’s shift toward renewable energy. The announcement was made during the 2025 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, highlighting the strategic importance of the project within Togo’s broader energy agenda.

The BESS project is a cornerstone of Togo’s “Mission 300” National Energy Pact, an ambitious plan to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s installed capacity from 26% to 63% by 2030. With nearly 40% of the population still lacking access to electricity, the initiative is expected to play a transformative role in expanding energy access, especially in underserved regions. By enabling the storage and efficient distribution of electricity generated from intermittent sources like solar and wind, the battery system will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and strengthen the resilience of Togo’s power infrastructure.

Feasibility studies funded by AFD will assess the technical, economic, and environmental dimensions of the project, laying the groundwork for future implementation and scalability. The collaboration with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) further underscores the international community’s confidence in Togo’s energy strategy and its potential to serve as a model for sustainable development across the region.

This initiative positions Togo as a frontrunner in green innovation and climate resilience. By investing in energy storage technology, the country is not only addressing immediate infrastructure needs but also paving the way for long-term economic growth and environmental stewardship. France’s support reflects a shared vision for a cleaner, more inclusive energy future, one where strategic partnerships and bold national plans converge to deliver lasting impact.
