FUFA has launched a Shs750 million medical scheme to cover 700 footballers in Uganda, ensuring players receive healthcare and reducing clubs’ medical costs.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has taken a major step toward improving player welfare by rolling out a Shs750 million medical insurance scheme for 700 footballers in the 2025/26 season. This initiative, in partnership with Case Clinic, covers players from 16 Uganda Premier League clubs and 12 FUFA Women Super League teams, ensuring they have access to quality healthcare while reducing the financial burden on clubs.

Starting September 1, each club will submit a list of 25 players for coverage, with 400 men and 300 women benefiting. FUFA emphasized that football is a high-contact sport with inevitable injuries, and the scheme demonstrates the federation’s commitment to player safety and the professionalization of Ugandan football.

The program builds on FUFA’s previous interventions, which have helped players like Josephat Ayebare of Ndejje University FC and Shadia Nankya, formerly of UCU Lady Cardinals, meet medical costs after career-threatening injuries. Analysts highlight that including women players is particularly significant, offering vital support to a rapidly growing but underfunded segment of the sport.

As Uganda prepares for international fixtures, including the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, this medical scheme represents a tangible investment in players’ health, performance, and long-term development, signaling FUFA’s dedication to elevating the standards of football in the country.

Takeaway: By prioritizing player welfare and healthcare access, FUFA sets a benchmark for professional football in Uganda, ensuring that athletes can focus on their game with confidence and security.
