Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently held a series of strategic meetings with leaders from Azerbaijan, Egypt, Sierra Leone, and Yemen during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, underscoring Greece’s growing diplomatic engagement across diverse regions. These discussions reflected a blend of geopolitical interests, cultural cooperation, and shared commitments to regional stability, positioning Greece as an active player in global affairs.

In his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Mitsotakis welcomed the recent peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, expressing support for efforts to stabilize the South Caucasus. The two leaders explored potential energy collaboration, particularly through vertical interconnectors that could enhance energy security and diversify supply routes in Europe. This dialogue aligns with Greece’s broader strategy to strengthen its role as a regional energy hub.

With Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Mitsotakis reaffirmed the strategic partnership between Greece and Egypt, focusing on migration management, regional security, and cultural preservation. A key point of discussion was the protection of Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai, a site of profound religious and historical significance. The leaders emphasized the importance of safeguarding shared heritage while deepening bilateral cooperation on pressing regional challenges.

During talks with Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, Mitsotakis highlighted Greece’s commitment to multilateralism and its support for Sierra Leone’s role within the United Nations Security Council. The conversation centered on collaborative approaches to global governance, peacekeeping, and sustainable development, reflecting mutual interests in strengthening international institutions.

In his meeting with Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Mitsotakis expressed solidarity with Yemen’s internationally recognized government and reiterated Greece’s support for freedom of navigation in regional waters. This stance reflects Greece’s strategic interest in maritime security and its broader commitment to upholding international law in conflict-affected zones.

Collectively, these meetings showcased Greece’s diplomatic outreach across continents, reinforcing its position as a bridge between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Mitsotakis’ engagements at the UN signaled a proactive foreign policy agenda rooted in dialogue, cooperation, and shared values.
