Rabat – A Kenyan parliamentary delegation visiting Morocco has reaffirmed Kenya’s recent stance on the Sahara issue, praising Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only sustainable solution to the long-standing territorial dispute.
The delegation began its visit to Morocco today, holding talks with officials from the Committee on Interior, Territorial Communities, and Infrastructure, as well as members of the Committee on Finance, Planning, and Economic Development in the House of Councillors, the lower chamber of Morocco’s parliament.
The visit highlights Morocco and Kenya’s growing strategic partnership, following Nairobi’s official endorsement of Morocco’s position on the Sahara. Both countries have pledged to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors in the wake of this diplomatic shift.
Kenya announced its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in May during Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s visit to Rabat, where he met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. In a joint statement, Kenya expressed its intention to work with like-minded nations to promote Morocco’s proposal and its implementation.
The statement also recognized the growing international consensus in favor of Morocco’s initiative, led by King Mohammed VI, which many now consider the most viable resolution to the Sahara dispute. This position contrasts sharply with that of countries such as Algeria and South Africa, which continue to back the Polisario Front’s separatist agenda.
‘Morocco’s remarkable progress on all fronts’
Kenya’s interest in expanding cooperation with Morocco extends beyond diplomacy. Kenyan leaders have expressed admiration for Morocco’s achievements in areas such as infrastructure and economic development.
“Morocco, a country where peace and security prevail, impresses with its remarkable progress on all fronts,” said Godfrey Osotsi, Chair of the Special Committee on Country Public Investments and Special Funds in the Kenyan Senate. He also reaffirmed the Kenyan Senate’s commitment to working closely with Morocco’s House of Councillors to advance Africa’s shared priorities.
The Kenyan delegation’s visit will continue through September 7.
