KIGEZI, UGANDA — As Uganda commemorates International Democracy Day, Kigezi Media Services, in collaboration with the Electoral Commission’s South Western Regional Office, is set to host a public dialogue focused on the growing influence of religion-based politics in the Kigezi sub-region.
The dialogue will take place on Thursday, September 18, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, and will be streamed live on the Kigezi TV YouTube channel to allow broader public participation beyond the physical venue.
The event responds to increasing concerns over voter behavior in the region, where political allegiance appears to be increasingly shaped by religious affiliation a trend particularly noted during the recent NRM party primaries. Organizers warn that this sectarian approach risks undermining democracy and entrenching divisive politics in local governance.
“This dialogue is aimed at promoting civic awareness and encouraging informed participation in the upcoming 2026 general elections,” said Norbert Ndyamuhakyi, CEO of Kigezi Television.
“It will also address the dangers of religious-based politics that are eating up the Kigezi sub-region.”
The session will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including electoral officials, religious leaders, political figures, youth leaders, and civil society representatives, in an open forum designed to foster constructive debate and develop practical solutions.
Robert Beine, Regional Electoral Officer for the South Western Region, underscored the importance of creating space for dialogue around this issue.
“It’s crucial to host this dialogue because it educates and raises awareness about civic responsibilities,” Beine said.
“Eliminating the negative effects of religious bias in political decision-making is essential for building a stronger democracy.”
Organizers say the discussion will focus on promoting peaceful political participation, strengthening issue-based campaigns, and encouraging inclusive democracy, where voters choose leaders based on competence, vision, and service delivery, rather than religious identity.
The public is invited to follow and engage in the conversation via Kigezi TV’s YouTube live stream, as the region takes steps toward building a more unified, informed, and democratic society ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
