Kampala, Uganda | Makerere University came alive with the spirit of innovation as students gathered for the launch of the 2025–2026 Huawei ICT Competition roadshow. The event, held on October 20 at the College of Computing and Information Sciences in partnership with Huawei Technologies Uganda, drew hundreds of eager students ready to explore opportunities in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
The launch kicked off Huawei’s annual ICT Competition tour across Ugandan universities, aimed at discovering and nurturing the country’s next generation of tech leaders. Huawei instructors led interactive sessions, explaining the competition’s structure, four main tracks Cloud, Computing, Network, and Innovation and the career benefits for participants, including fully sponsored training, global certifications, internships, and job opportunities.
The Network Track covers Data Communication, WLAN, Routing & Switching, and Network Security. The Cloud Track focuses on Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence. The Computing Track emphasizes openEuler-based cloud and server operating systems, openGauss database management, and Kunpeng architecture, while the Innovation Track challenges participants to develop practical, original solutions to real-world problems.
Huawei’s roadshows bridge academia and industry, equipping students with practical, employable skills. The company reaffirmed its commitment to developing Uganda’s digital talent and supporting youth poised to lead Africa’s digital transformation. Over the years, Huawei has partnered with Makerere University through its ICT Academy to train and mentor students, providing them with international exposure and competitive advantage.
Sunday Emmanuel, Chairperson of the Makerere University Technology Society, urged students to seize the opportunity. “This competition is not just about winning it’s about gaining essential skills that make you competitive in the global job market,” he said, praising Huawei’s continued support.
Registered students will begin free online training under Huawei ICT Academy instructors. The competition progresses from preliminary theoretical and technical stages to national, regional, and finally, global finals in China.
The Huawei ICT Competition, themed “Connection, Glory, Future” and promoted under the slogan “I.C. The Future,” is a global initiative designed to inspire young people to develop ICT excellence through hands-on experience and collaboration. It brings together governments, academia, and industry players to strengthen the global digital talent ecosystem.
