In a powerful display of unity and civic responsibility, eleven presidential candidates in Malawi have signed a Peace Declaration ahead of the country’s general elections scheduled for September 16, 2025. The signing ceremony, held at the Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe, was organized by the Public Affairs Committee, a respected multi-faith organization known for its role in promoting dialogue and national cohesion. Under the theme “In choosing a path of dialogue and mediation, violence is not an option,” the event marked a significant moment in Malawi’s democratic journey, bringing together contenders from across the political spectrum in a shared commitment to peaceful conduct.

President Lazarus Chakwera led the proceedings, exchanging cordial greetings with fellow candidates including Joyce Banda of the People’s Party, Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front, and Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement. Their participation underscored a collective desire to uphold democratic values and foster national stability. However, the absence of key figures such as former president Peter Mutharika and Vice President Michael Usi cast a shadow over the event. Because the declaration required the physical presence of candidates, their respective parties, the Democratic Progressive Party and Odya Zake Alibe Mlandu, were barred from endorsing the pact, despite attempts by proxies to sign on their behalf.

The Peace Declaration outlines a clear framework for responsible political engagement, urging candidates to refrain from hate speech, respect electoral outcomes, and resolve disputes through legal and peaceful channels. With seventeen contenders vying for the presidency, the pledge is seen as a vital safeguard against the kind of political unrest that has marred past elections in Malawi. It also reflects growing public demand for accountability, civility, and a commitment to national unity in the face of economic and social challenges.

As the election date approaches, the declaration stands as both a symbolic and practical step toward ensuring a peaceful transition of power. It sends a message to voters, political parties, and the international community that Malawi is determined to strengthen its democratic institutions and protect the integrity of its electoral process. Whether this spirit of cooperation will hold through the campaign season remains to be seen, but the signing of the Peace Declaration offers a hopeful glimpse of what a mature and inclusive democracy can look like.
