McDermott has successfully completed its first subsea engineering contract in Angola, marking a significant milestone in the country’s offshore energy development. The project involved the full execution of an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPSCI) scope for the Begonia oilfield, operated by TotalEnergies. Located approximately 150 kilometers off Angola’s coast in Block 17/06, the Begonia field is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation’s oil production capacity. The field began producing in July 2025, with an initial output of 30,000 barrels per day, contributing to Angola’s efforts to maintain its position as a leading oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa.

Awarded in 2022, the EPSCI contract encompassed a comprehensive range of services, including detailed engineering, procurement of critical subsea components, construction and fabrication, offshore installation, and final commissioning. McDermott leveraged its global engineering expertise and local capabilities, including expanded onshore fabrication facilities in Luanda, to deliver the project efficiently and safely. The offshore execution was supported by McDermott’s versatile marine fleet, which played a crucial role in the timely installation of subsea infrastructure.

The Begonia development is particularly notable as Angola’s first inter-block subsea tieback, linking five subsea wells to the existing Pazflor Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit in neighboring Block 17. This innovative approach maximizes the use of existing infrastructure, reducing costs and environmental impact while accelerating production timelines. The successful integration of Begonia into the broader offshore network demonstrates the potential for similar developments in the region, where underutilized assets can be optimized through strategic engineering solutions.

McDermott’s achievement not only strengthens its presence in the African energy sector but also reinforces Angola’s commitment to attracting international expertise and investment in its oil and gas industry. The collaboration with TotalEnergies sets a precedent for future projects, showcasing how technical excellence, local engagement, and operational efficiency can converge to deliver complex offshore developments. As Angola continues to diversify and expand its energy portfolio, the completion of the Begonia EPSCI contract stands as a testament to the country’s evolving capabilities and its strategic partnerships in the global energy landscape.
