Rabat, Morocco – July 22, 2025
Host nation Morocco secured a place in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final after edging Ghana 4–2 on penalties, following a 1–1 draw after extra time in a tense semi-final clash held at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.
The match marked a pivotal moment for Moroccan women’s football, as the Atlas Lionesses reached their second consecutive WAFCON final. They will now face Nigeria, who advanced after defeating South Africa in the other semi-final.
Match Summary
Ghana took the lead in the 26th minute through midfielder Stella Nyamekye, capitalizing on a rebound to beat Moroccan goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi. Morocco equalized in the 55th minute when Sakina Ouzraoui calmly finished from close range following sustained pressure.
Despite several opportunities for both sides in regulation and extra time, the game remained tied, leading to a penalty shootout.
Morocco converted all four of their penalties, while Er-Rmichi saved Ghana's third attempt, and Comfort Yeboah's effort struck the post, sealing a 4–2 victory for the North Africans.
Path to the Final
Morocco entered the semi-finals unbeaten, having topped Group A and eliminated Mali in the quarter-finals. Ghana, meanwhile, had fought their way through a challenging group stage and survived a penalty shootout against Algeria to reach the final four.
This win cements Morocco’s status as a rising power in African women’s football. It also marks the second time they have reached a WAFCON final—following their historic run in 2022, also as hosts.
Final Showdown with Nigeria
Morocco now prepares to face record nine-time champions Nigeria in the final, set for Saturday, July 27, in Rabat. The Super Falcons advanced after a dramatic 2–1 win over defending champions South Africa in Casablanca.
The upcoming final is expected to draw significant attention, as it features a showdown between a dominant West African powerhouse and a rapidly ascending North African side looking to make history on home soil.
