President Museveni has proclaimed Uganda as the most democratic country in the world.
“Our democracy is genuine, not a mere show like in some other countries. We represent all segments of the population. We have constituency MPs where everyone participates in elections, as well as affirmative action for Women MPs,” he stated. “We also have MPs for the disabled, workers, youths, soldiers, and the elderly. I’d like to know which country can be more democratic than this.”
The president made these comments while addressing journalists in Gulu on Thursday. He emphasized that in addition to MPs, Ugandans elect their leaders at every level, from the village and parish to the sub-county and district, which he described as the best example of democracy in the world.
However, Museveni noted that the only challenge is that some leaders are unsure of their roles and may resort to populism.
“Sometimes, they try to be populists, handing out money to the population and accumulating debt. I wish they would use their mandate to scrutinize government programs like Emyooga, PDM, and investigate why roads aren’t completed. If they could properly monitor these, we could make significant progress, as this is what they are supposed to do,” he added.
