Lugazi, Uganda | Zambia’s Dominic Musonda made a striking debut in Uganda, firing a six-under 65 to take the early lead at the Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open on Wednesday at the challenging par-71 Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club. The 22-year-old final-year Mechanical Engineering student showcased exceptional skill and composure, immediately putting the field on notice.
Only three other golfers Joseph Cwinya-ai, Elton Thembo, and Abdul Kakeeto managed under-par rounds in the opening round, while defending champion Joseph Reagan Akena struggled with a six-over 77 on his home course. Musonda, however, sank eight birdies and displayed impressive scrambling ability, finishing with a two-stroke advantage over second-placed Cwinya-ai. His only setbacks were bogeys on the par-4 14th and par-3 17th.
Despite his strong start, Musonda believes he can improve further. “I hope that my swing comes back. I struggled a lot from the tee and my long irons. My short game and putting saved me,” he told reporters. “Lugazi is a hard course compared to the courses in Zambia. Here, you can’t have a proper stance. I’ve played many courses around the world, but this one is very challenging.”
Ugandan golfers remain in contention. Cwinya-ai, Thembo, and Kakeeto carded 67 and 70s, while John Musiimenta, Rogers Eyoyo, and Peter Tumusiime all posted level-par 71, keeping the race tight behind Musonda. Cwinya-ai, known for thriving while chasing, is expected to mount a strong challenge in the coming rounds.
Seventy golfers participated in the opening round, marking an impressive turnout as Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club hosts the prestigious Uganda Golf Open for the first time. The 84th edition of the tournament enjoys the support of major sponsors, including Johnnie Walker, Isuzu, NBS Sport, MAC East Africa, Medisell, MTN MoMo, Uganda Tourism Board, Aquafina, ABSA Bank, and Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club.
Musonda’s brilliant performance sets the stage for a thrilling competition as the tournament continues, with both emerging talent and seasoned local players vying for glory.
