Namibia has voiced its full support for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in response to the recent electoral dispute in Tanzania, reinforcing its commitment to democratic principles and regional solidarity. The 2025 general elections in Tanzania have drawn widespread criticism following a landslide victory by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who reportedly secured 98% of the vote. The SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) raised serious concerns about the credibility of the electoral process, citing irregularities, suppression of opposition voices, and limited transparency.

In a statement issued by Presidential Press Secretary Jonas Mbambo, Namibia affirmed its alignment with SADC’s findings and emphasized the importance of upholding democratic norms across the region. The government called on all political actors in Tanzania to engage in peaceful dialogue and to respect the rule of law, underscoring the need for electoral processes that reflect the will of the people. Namibia’s position also signals its endorsement of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, which plays a key role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

This diplomatic stance highlights Namibia’s broader commitment to regional governance and accountability. By siding with SADC, Namibia joins other member states in advocating for electoral integrity and the protection of civil liberties. The move also reflects a growing consensus within the bloc that democratic backsliding must be addressed collectively to preserve the credibility and unity of the region.

As tensions remain high in Tanzania, Namibia’s support for SADC’s position sends a clear message: the future of Southern Africa depends on transparent, inclusive, and fair democratic processes. Through this alignment, Namibia reinforces its role as a principled actor in regional affairs, dedicated to fostering peace, stability, and democratic resilience.
