Kampala, Uganda | Emmanuel Andama, a third-year student at Kyambogo University, has been elected Guild President in a by-election held on September 15, following the dismissal of former Guild President Benjamin Akiso. Andama won with 2,391 votes, beating his closest rival, Tonney Bwete, who received 1,333 votes.
Andama assumes leadership at a critical moment, after Akiso was dismissed in July over his involvement in an April protest against perceived unfair tuition policies. His first tasks include contributing to the ongoing constitution review process of the university guild.
University spokesperson Ruben Twinomujuni described the election process as fair and transparent. He expressed optimism about working with Andama, stating: “As long as he is representing students’ interests, we shall definitely work together.”
Both Akiso and Andama are members of the National Unity Platform (NUP). Akiso, previously a diploma student in Languages, is currently running for the Toroma County Parliamentary seat in Katakwi District under the same party.
