In a powerful affirmation of spiritual commitment, newly ordained priests in Mozambique and Angola have been urged to cultivate a deep and enduring intimacy with Christ as the cornerstone of their priestly vocation. This call to spiritual depth was echoed across recent ordination ceremonies, where bishops emphasized that the heart of priestly ministry lies not in activism or public recognition, but in a profound relationship with Jesus nurtured through prayer, the Eucharist, and humble service.

In the Catholic Diocese of Xai-Xai, Mozambique, Bishop Lucio Andrice Muandula presided over the ordination of Deacons Silva Coverdal Machava and Sebastião Chaúque. During his homily, Bishop Muandula reminded the ordinands that their first and most essential calling is to be with Christ. He stressed that this intimacy is not optional but foundational, enabling priests to authentically proclaim the Gospel and serve the faithful. “The first calling of a priest is to be with Christ,” he said, “to build intimacy with Him in prayer and the Eucharist, so that he may then be sent to proclaim the Good News.” He cautioned against the dangers of a self-centered priesthood, where the focus shifts from service to personal ambition, and urged the new priests to embrace humility and pastoral dedication.

A similar message resonated in Angola’s Diocese of Sumbe, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Bishop Firmino David, who ordained 28 new priests, called on them to remain rooted in Christ through constant prayer and a genuine closeness to the communities they will serve. His exhortation underscored the importance of spiritual authenticity, reminding the newly ordained that their effectiveness as ministers of the Church depends not on charisma or eloquence, but on their capacity to reflect Christ’s love and compassion in their daily lives.

These ordinations come at a time when the Church in both Mozambique and Angola faces complex pastoral challenges, including poverty, social unrest, and the need for evangelization in remote areas. In such contexts, the bishops’ emphasis on spiritual depth and pastoral presence is not merely aspirational, it is essential. By urging the new priests to prioritize their relationship with Christ, the Church affirms that true ministry begins not with action, but with contemplation, communion, and a heart attuned to the will of God.

The ceremonies were marked by joy, reverence, and a palpable sense of mission. Families, parishioners, and fellow clergy gathered to witness the ordinations, offering prayers and support for the newly consecrated priests. As they step into their new roles, these men carry with them the weight of expectation and the promise of transformation, not only for themselves, but for the communities they will shepherd. Their journey begins at the altar, but its true measure will be found in the quiet moments of prayer, the compassionate listening to parishioners, and the unwavering commitment to live as servants of Christ.
