The National Unity Platform (NUP) has commenced the vetting process for its parliamentary flag bearers ahead of the 2026 elections, with top party officials undergoing scrutiny. Among those vetted were Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, who is vying for the Kampala Central MP seat; party spokesperson and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi for Nakawa West; and Secretary for International Relations Fred Nyanzi, who is eyeing Kawempe North. Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, currently on remand in Luzira Prison, was also part of the vetting process.
The exercise, which began on September 16, has raised concerns among some aspirants about potential bias, given the close ties between the vetted leaders and the party's Elections Management Committee (EMC). Critics argue that such affiliations could influence the fairness of the selection process. However, Rubongoya dismissed these fears, emphasizing that the vetting process is open and that positions are not reserved for specific individuals.
The vetting is scheduled to conclude on September 21, with final results expected within two weeks. As the youngest political party in Uganda prepares for the upcoming elections, the NUP faces a critical test of its internal processes and commitment to democratic principles.
