Kampala, Uganda | Alberiki Nuwebwesigye’s journey from a vocational student to a thriving employer exemplifies the transformative power of technical education and entrepreneurship in Uganda. Nuwebwesigye began his career in 2010 at Nyamitanga Technical Institute in Mbarara, where he earned an Advanced Certificate in Electrical Installation. Motivated by instructors who emphasized creating opportunities rather than merely seeking jobs, he quickly translated his training into practical work, gaining hands-on experience in three-phase electrical installations.
After completing his studies, he enrolled at Uganda Technical College, Bushenyi, to pursue a Diploma in Electrical Engineering, further honing his technical skills. His early work experience included serving as a foreman on electrification projects for the Uganda Rural Electrification Agency, which exposed him to rural infrastructure development and project management.
In 2014, Nuwebwesigye founded his own electrical services company, initially handling small residential projects. The company’s breakthrough came when he secured a contract with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation in Bushenyi, a milestone that allowed him to formally register the business and expand operations. Today, his firm has successfully completed over 50 major contracts, ranging from residential to institutional installations, while providing employment opportunities for dozens of local youth.
Beyond business, Nuwebwesigye has invested in education and mentorship. In 2014, he returned to Nyamitanga Technical Institute as a lecturer and later, in 2020, became a government-appointed instructor at the institute. He now manages two work-camps that employ more than 20 young people, offering them both practical training and a pathway to stable employment.
Nuwebwesigye emphasizes that his success is built on a combination of perseverance, technical competence, and a commitment to supporting others. Married with five children, including twins, and a homeowner in Kakoba, he credits his vocational training for providing the foundation to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for himself and others.
Looking ahead, Nuwebwesigye plans to expand into power line construction and establish an office in Mbarara City, aiming to elevate his company’s profile and impact further. His story illustrates the critical role of vocational education, entrepreneurship, and mentorship in unlocking economic potential and empowering communities across Uganda.
