KAMPALA, UGANDA – Defending champions Senegal ended Uganda’s dream run at the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a narrow 1-0 victory in Saturday’s quarterfinal clash at the Mandela National Stadium.
Oumar Ba’s decisive strike in the 62nd minute proved the difference, silencing the home crowd as Senegal booked their place in the semifinals. The forward capitalized on a well-placed cross from Libasse Gueye, slipping through Uganda’s defense before drilling a low right-footed shot past goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa.
Uganda, urged on by passionate fans, posed consistent threats through Allan Okello, Reagan Mpande, and Abdu Karim Watambala. Substitute Ivan Ahimbisibwe nearly leveled with two close attempts, while Arnold Odong forced a sharp save from Senegal’s Marc Philips Arona Diof. Despite their efforts, the Cranes could not find the equalizer.
At the final whistle, it was heartbreak for the hosts as Senegal celebrated their progression. Coach Souleymane Diallo praised his side’s resilience, noting, “They beat us in the CECAFA 3-Nations tournament a few weeks ago, and now we have avenged.”
The result marks another setback for the co-hosting nations, following Kenya’s penalty shootout loss to Madagascar and Tanzania’s elimination by Morocco. The CHAN tournament, reserved for players active in domestic leagues, will conclude with the final on August 30 in Nairobi.
