Russia and Tanzania have strengthened their strategic relationship after senior officials from both countries held high-level talks in Moscow, underscoring a growing partnership across diplomatic, economic, and security spheres.

On February 9, 2026, Tanzanian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in the Russian capital, where he delivered a letter from Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The exchange highlighted Tanzania’s commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation and deepening diplomatic ties.

Officials from both sides emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade, economic development, defense, and diplomatic engagement, noting shared interests on global and regional issues. Discussions also touched on preparations for the next Russia–Africa summit, signaling Moscow’s continued engagement with African partners.

The talks reflect a broader trend of strengthening Russia’s footprint in East Africa, with Tanzania emerging as a key partner in Moscow’s diplomatic and economic outreach across the continent. Analysts say this engagement potentially spans deeper economic cooperation and strategic coordination in international forums.
