South Africa’s security cluster has declared itself fully prepared for the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit this weekend in Johannesburg. According to national authorities, a robust five-pillar security strategy is in place, combining intelligence gathering, high-visibility policing, and rapid-response capabilities.
As part of the preparations, more than 3,500 newly trained police constables are being deployed. A hard lockdown will be enforced from Friday through Monday around the Nasrec Expo Centre and the FNB Stadium key sites for the summit.
Police have also designated clear areas for protests during the summit. Those who wish to demonstrate are required to use “speakers’ corners” near the venue, while law enforcement will strictly enforce the rules.
NATJOINTS, the body coordinating the security operations, has expressed confidence that the plans in place will ensure a safe and peaceful summit.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi reaffirmed the province’s readiness, warning that any attempt to disrupt the summit will be met with a firm response from the state
