South Africa has voiced strong support for Hamas’ recent decision to release Israeli hostages, framing the move as a pivotal opportunity to de-escalate tensions and foster renewed dialogue in the region. In a statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the South African government urged Israel to respond with reciprocal humanitarian gestures, including the release of Palestinian detainees and a commitment to a permanent ceasefire. This call for mutual action reflects South Africa’s longstanding position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, rooted in principles of justice, human rights, and international law.

DIRCO emphasized that the release of hostages by Hamas should be seen not only as a humanitarian act but also as a confidence-building measure capable of restoring trust between the parties. The government specifically highlighted the plight of Palestinian political prisoners, including children and individuals detained during humanitarian missions, arguing that their release would signal a genuine commitment to peace and reconciliation. South Africa’s appeal comes at a time when global efforts to broker a ceasefire have intensified, following months of devastating violence in Gaza that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless civilians.

Reaffirming its commitment to a rules-based international order, South Africa stressed that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without addressing the root causes of the conflict. Central to this is the recognition of the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state in accordance with United Nations resolutions. The government reiterated that any meaningful resolution must be inclusive, just, and grounded in the principles of dignity and equality for all parties involved.

South Africa also expressed its readiness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace, offering its experience in conflict resolution and transitional justice as a resource for dialogue. The country’s stance reflects a broader diplomatic push to advocate for human rights and equity in global conflict zones, positioning itself as a vocal proponent of nonviolent solutions and international solidarity. In urging Israeli reciprocity, South Africa is not only responding to a moment of humanitarian significance but also reinforcing its belief that peace is possible when both sides are willing to act with courage and compassion.
