Sudanese cinema has scored a major international victory after the film Cotton Queen won the Golden Alexander Award, the top prize at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece.

Directed by Suzannah Mirghani, Cotton Queen captivated juries and audiences alike with its powerful storytelling, emotional depth, and striking portrayal of women’s resilience in Sudanese society. The film explores themes of identity, tradition, and the impact of modernization through the life of a young woman navigating the complexities of rural Sudan.

In her acceptance speech, Mirghani dedicated the award to “the people of Sudan,” highlighting the challenges faced by Sudanese artists amid the country’s ongoing political and humanitarian crises.

“This film is a voice for Sudanese women and a celebration of their strength, creativity, and endurance,” she said.

The win marks a significant milestone for Sudan’s emerging film industry, which has gained increasing global attention in recent years despite limited funding and infrastructure. Critics have praised Cotton Queen for its poetic cinematography and cultural authenticity, calling it “a landmark moment for African storytelling.”

The Thessaloniki International Film Festival, one of Europe’s most respected cinematic events, celebrates innovative voices from around the world. This year’s edition showcased films from over 50 countries, with Cotton Queen standing out for its compelling narrative and social relevance.

The success of Cotton Queen follows a growing wave of recognition for Sudanese filmmakers on the international stage, building on the legacy of acclaimed works such as You Will Die at Twenty and Goodbye Julia.

As celebrations continue, Cotton Queen is expected to feature prominently at upcoming global festivals, cementing its place as one of Africa’s most significant films of the year.
