Kampala, Uganda | Uganda Breweries recently hosted a Tanqueray Gin Masterclass, bringing together 40 of Kampala’s most promising bartenders from leading hotels, restaurants, and cocktail bars to master the art of infusion in mixology.

The day-long session provided an in-depth exploration of flavor creation, guiding participants through hands-on exercises designed to refine their skills and challenge them to craft innovative, complex cocktails. Bartenders delved into the versatility of Tanqueray and other spirits, learning to combine flavors and aromas to create signature garnishes and elevate the overall drinking experience.

Key training focused on balancing flavors using techniques with temperature, salt, and sugar, enabling bartenders to soften acidity, refine harsh notes, and enhance both simple and intricate cocktails. Attendees experimented with popular ingredients such as pineapple and passion fruit, mastering creative combinations that harmonized sweetness, acidity, and heat.

The masterclass was led by internationally acclaimed mixologist Kingkline Ojal from Nairobi and Uganda’s own Steven Baguma, UBL Reserve Brand Ambassador. Both experts circulated among the participants, offering personalized coaching and sharing insights on flavor pairing and cocktail innovation.

“The best cocktails start with understanding the client’s preferences and using the flavors around you,” said Kingkline. “Uganda has a wealth of unique ingredients there’s no reason we shouldn’t explore and discover what works best.”

The event is part of Uganda Breweries’ Masterclass International Series, a program dedicated to identifying, mentoring, and elevating local talent in preparation for competitions such as the prestigious Diageo World Class Bartending Competition.

Nancy Nansikombi, Tanqueray East Africa Brand Manager, emphasized the initiative’s purpose: “Our commitment goes beyond serving premium gin; we are investing in the people who craft the moments. This masterclass equips bartenders with the skills and confidence to compete globally and redefine Kampala’s cocktail culture.”

The session concluded with certifications and gift hampers for attendees, followed by a cocktail competition showcasing the creative techniques learned during the day. Tanqueray celebrated the event as a milestone in raising the bar for mixology in Uganda.
