Togo has taken a bold step toward transforming its energy landscape with the launch of a pilot battery energy storage system (BESS) project, backed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Announced during the 2025 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, the initiative includes a $200,000 contribution to fund feasibility studies, marking a pivotal moment in Togo’s push for renewable energy integration and universal electricity access by 2030.

The pilot project is designed to deliver an initial capacity of 55 megawatts and forms part of Togo’s “Mission 300” National Energy Pact. This ambitious national plan aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s installed capacity from 26% to 63% by the end of the decade. With approximately 40% of the population still lacking access to electricity, the BESS initiative is expected to stabilize the national grid, enhance energy reliability, and support the expansion of clean energy sources such as solar and wind.

By investing in energy storage, Togo is addressing one of the key challenges in renewable energy deployment, intermittency. The ability to store and dispatch electricity when needed will allow the country to better manage fluctuations in supply and demand, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and improve overall grid performance. The feasibility studies funded by AFD and GEAPP will evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental viability of the project, laying the foundation for future implementation and scaling.

This initiative also reflects growing international confidence in Togo’s energy strategy and its commitment to climate resilience. The partnership with AFD and GEAPP demonstrates how targeted investments and global collaboration can accelerate progress toward sustainable development goals. As Togo positions itself as a regional leader in green innovation, the pilot project serves as a model for other nations seeking to harness the power of energy storage to drive inclusive growth and environmental stewardship.
