Orange Tunisia has officially welcomed the arrival of the MEDUSA submarine cable in Bizerte, marking a transformative moment for Tunisia’s digital infrastructure and regional connectivity. As the first African country to host a landing point for this ambitious fiber-optic network, Tunisia is now positioned at the forefront of Mediterranean digital integration. The MEDUSA cable, spanning over 8,000 kilometers, is the largest submarine cable system in the Mediterranean, designed to connect thirteen countries across North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East. This milestone reflects Tunisia’s growing role in global data exchange and its strategic ambition to become a regional hub for digital innovation.
The cable’s deployment is expected to significantly enhance Tunisia’s internet capacity, speed, and reliability, benefiting businesses, institutions, and consumers alike. With 24 fiber pairs and a total system capacity of 480 terabits per second, the MEDUSA cable is equipped with cutting-edge technologies such as Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and predictive maintenance systems. These features ensure high performance, operational resilience, and long-term stability, making the infrastructure a cornerstone of Tunisia’s digital transformation strategy. The diversification of international bandwidth sources also strengthens the country’s digital security and reduces reliance on existing routes, providing a more robust foundation for future growth.
This development aligns with Tunisia’s broader national goals to expand broadband access, foster technological innovation, and attract foreign investment in the tech sector. By hosting a landing point for the MEDUSA cable, Tunisia gains not only technical advantages but also geopolitical relevance in the Mediterranean’s evolving digital landscape. The partnership with Orange Tunisia underscores the critical role of the private sector in driving infrastructure modernization and supporting national development objectives. It also highlights the country’s commitment to building a more inclusive and competitive digital economy.
As global demand for data continues to surge, the MEDUSA cable positions Tunisia to meet future connectivity needs while enhancing its standing in international digital networks. The project represents a shared vision among participating nations to create a more interconnected, secure, and forward-looking Mediterranean region. For Tunisia, this is more than a technological upgrade, it is a strategic leap toward digital leadership and regional influence in the 21st century.
