Olivia Mugaba, Head of SME at Equity Bank Uganda, emphasized the pivotal role of SMEs in the economy, noting that they account for roughly 40% of national income in emerging markets and 50% in developed economies, providing 7 out of every 10 new jobs glob

Mbale buzzed with excitement as the TUPANGE Business Ne Equity Forum made its first regional stop in Eastern Uganda, drawing over 500 entrepreneurs eager to unlock new opportunities. Organized by Equity Bank under the theme “Financing Integrated Value Chains and SME Growth,” the forum marked a pivotal step in empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs) the backbone of Uganda’s economy.

At the event, inspirational stories and practical solutions took center stage. Tourism entrepreneur Saleh Naminya captivated attendees with his journey from teacher to successful safari lodge owner. He emphasized how value chain collaboration linking farmers, furniture makers, and transport providers creates sustainable growth when backed by accessible financing. His message was clear: “No business stands alone.”

Claver Serumaga, Executive Director of Commercial Banking at Equity Bank Uganda, reinforced the bank’s mission to transform lives by fueling SME growth. He announced innovative financing options, including unsecured supplier loans of up to UGX 3 billion and digital tools like Equity Online for seamless payments. Serumaga also assured business owners of improved customer service, calling on clients to reject bribery and embrace a culture of respect.

The forum delivered eight actionable lessons for SMEs ranging from tax compliance to digital adoption and international market access. Speakers highlighted Uganda’s high SME failure rate of 53%, pointing to lack of capital and market access as key challenges. Equity Bank showcased real success stories, including a business that scaled its credit line fivefold by joining value chain financing programs.

Awards were also given to outstanding clients, celebrating commitment and influence within the SME community. The event underscored a powerful truth: when SMEs thrive, entire communities prosper.

With upcoming forums in Arua, Fort Portal, and Hoima, Equity Bank aims to support over 1,000 SMEs by the end of the year. As Serumaga put it, “When SMEs thrive, the nation prospers.”

Takeaway

The Mbale forum was more than a networking event it was a call to action for entrepreneurs to embrace collaboration, leverage financial tools, and position themselves for growth. As Equity Bank continues its regional tour, Uganda’s SMEs stand at the cusp of a new era of opportunity and transformation.
