KAMPALA, UGANDA Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has unveiled its 2025 Sustainability Report under the theme “A Sustainable Future in Every Drop,” highlighting its continued commitment to environmental stewardship, community development, and responsible business practices.
“At Uganda Breweries, every drop of beer carries a story from the grain grown by our farmers to the glass raised in celebration,” said Felicite Nson, Managing Director of UBL. “Sustainability is embedded in every decision we make, from sourcing raw materials to powering our brewery.”
Nson noted that UBL’s commitment to sustainability had earned global recognition, with the brewery named Diageo Brewery of the Year 2025 for the second consecutive year, in recognition of its leadership in energy efficiency, water conservation, and operational excellence.
The report outlines UBL’s integrated approach to sustainability across its value chain, emphasizing its commitment to regenerative agriculture, water stewardship, and the journey toward net-zero emissions. During the 2025 financial year, the company invested over Sh1.5 billion in water projects across Uganda, including the installation of ten hand-pump boreholes and a solar-powered mini water scheme with three collection points in Kibasi, Fort Portal, benefiting more than 1,100 households. UBL also constructed a sanitation facility at Bukoto Market serving over 500 users daily and provided access to safe water for over 4,900 households in the Teso sub-region through nine boreholes.
Through the Elgon Pamoja Partnership, a UGX 1 billion, three-year collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Environment and Aid Environment, UBL is working to restore ecosystems in the Mt. Elgon catchment area and secure long-term water resources. The report further reveals that the brewery’s Zero Liquid Discharge pilot facility recovered 132,421 cubic meters of water, equivalent to 36% of total water used, improving water performance from 2.34 to 2.30 liters per liter of product.
UBL’s efforts in climate action have also yielded impressive results, with carbon emissions reduced by over 90% through the adoption of biomass energy at the brewery and the use of electric forklifts at its spirits facility. Emissions from direct operations now stand at 1.2 kilotonnes.
The report highlights that through its Farm for Success program, UBL partnered with more than 35,000 farmers, investing over UGX 45 billion in sourcing sorghum, barley, and maize, strengthening rural livelihoods and supporting Uganda’s National Development Plan. The company’s Learning for Life initiative trained 366 youth, including 211 women, equipping them with business and hospitality skills to enhance employability in the service sector.
Dr. Alfred Okot Okidi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Environment, commended UBL’s collaboration with government agencies in advancing Uganda’s sustainability agenda. He noted that UBL’s water stewardship and reforestation efforts such as the restoration of the Gangu and Nawandigi wetlands, catchment protection in the Lake Victoria Basin, and sustainable water-use programs deliver tangible benefits to communities and the environment.
As a founding member of Green Action for Sustainable Production (GASP), UBL continues to promote the circular economy by increasing recycled content in PET bottles from 0% to 25.8% and partnering with suppliers to include 40% recycled content in plastic packaging.
In its responsible drinking campaigns, UBL’s Eyo Red Card program reached over 26,000 students in 69 schools across Central and Eastern Uganda in 2025. Since 2021, the company has educated more than 100,000 students in over 200 schools about responsible alcohol consumption.
Officials said UBL’s 2025 Sustainability Report reflects the company’s holistic approach to growth balancing business success with environmental stewardship, community development, and responsible practices truly embodying a sustainable future in every drop.
