Uganda Reopens Bunagana and Mupaka Border Crossings with DRC After Four-Year Closure
After four years of closure, Uganda has officially reopened its border points with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at Bunagana and Mupaka. The border had been shut since June 2022 due to intensified rebel activity by the M23 group in eastern DRC.
The decision to close the crossings was initially made by the Kisoro District Security Committee, following escalating insecurity in the region. However, improved conditions have now paved the way for a coordinated reopening.
The re-opening ceremony was led by Kisoro Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Hajji Badru Sebyara, who met with a delegation from the DRC led by Bunagana Mayor Désiré Kanyamarere. Local leaders from both sides gathered to mark the occasion and affirm their commitment to restoring cross-border cooperation.
During the event, RDC Sebyara expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for authorizing the reopening, emphasizing that the move will revitalize trade and improve livelihoods for border communities.
"We are so thankful to President Museveni for allowing this border to be reopened," Sebyara stated.

Other local leaders, including Bufumbira South MP Seruganda Niyonsaba and Kisoro District Chairperson Abel Bizimana, echoed Sebyara’s sentiments. They also extended thanks to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his role in facilitating the reopening.
"The closure had a devastating impact on our people—especially business owners," one official noted. "Some were forced to sell their property after suffering heavy losses."

Mayor Ismail Ndayambaje of Bunagana called on traders and business operators to resume commercial activities along the border, assuring them of improved security and cooperation.
The reopening is expected to restore economic activity, strengthen Uganda-DRC relations, and bring relief to residents on both sides who have long suffered from the disruption in trade and mobility.
