Uganda is set to play a pivotal role on the global football stage as it prepares to host the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifier between Somalia and Guinea. The match will be staged at the iconic Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole on September 5, 2025, following a special request from Somalia’s football federation.

According to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), Somalia sought Uganda’s support after failing to secure a FIFA- and CAF-approved stadium of its own. FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson confirmed the development, noting that the arrangement highlights Uganda’s growing reputation as a trusted venue for international fixtures. Interestingly, the fixture will take place on the same day Uganda faces Mozambique in its own qualifier at the same stadium, making it a double-header of high-stakes action.

In Group G, Somalia currently sits at the bottom with just one point from six matches, while Guinea ranks fifth with seven points. Uganda, still chasing its first-ever senior men’s or women’s FIFA World Cup appearance, sits fourth on nine points. Algeria leads the pack with 15 points, setting the pace in the race for one of Africa’s nine available slots at the 2026 tournament to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Hosting the Somalia vs Guinea clash not only boosts Uganda’s football profile but also underscores its commitment to supporting fellow African nations in advancing the game. With fans set to witness back-to-back qualifiers at Namboole, the stage is set for an electrifying day of football.

Takeaway: Beyond the scores and standings, Uganda’s role as a host reflects its growing influence in African football. As the Cranes fight to keep their World Cup dream alive, the country is also cementing its place as a hub for regional sporting excellence.
