Kampala came alive with color and excitement as Ugandans celebrated 60 years of Uganda Waragi the drink fondly known as The Spirit of Uganda. A vibrant procession of boda bodas filled the city’s streets, embodying the energy, warmth, and connection that have defined both the nation and its iconic gin since 1965.
The anniversary was more than a milestone for Uganda Breweries Limited; it was a heartfelt tribute to Uganda’s people the dreamers, hustlers, and creators who keep the country moving. Partnering with SafeBoda, the brand honored the boda boda community, a symbol of Uganda’s ingenuity and determination.
“We chose to celebrate with the boda boda community because they truly reflect Uganda’s spirit of creativity and hustle. Just like Uganda Waragi, they connect us and keep us moving,” said Hilda Aguti, Marketing Manager, Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries Limited.
Across Kampala, the celebration touched lives in markets, salons, and roadside stalls. In Wandegeya, hairdressers received surprise gifts as they worked their magic, while the aroma of Kikalaayi Chicken and sizzling rolex filled the air. At Nakawa Market, vendors paused from their daily grind to share laughter, joy, and a taste of home.
As the day wound down, the city gathered around hearty meals of matooke, kinyebwa, and beef stew a reminder that no Ugandan celebration is complete without food, music, and laughter.
“For 60 years, Uganda Waragi has shared in our laughter and memories. This anniversary is our thank-you to every Ugandan who has made our spirit their own and that’s SO UG SO 60,” said Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager, Uganda Waragi.
Born in 1965 from Uganda’s long tradition of gin-making, Uganda Waragi has become a symbol of pride and craftsmanship. Made with pure water from Lake Victoria and a blend of botanicals, it has earned over 28 international gold awards, including the prestigious Grand Gold from Monde Selection in 2023.
“For Uganda Waragi, this milestone celebrates resilience and innovation. For Uganda, it’s a tribute to our shared heritage and creativity a reflection of what it means to be proudly Ugandan,” said Edgar Kihumuro, Shopper Manager.
