The Uganda Women’s T20 Elite League kicked off at the Lugogo Cricket Oval on January 27, 2026, bringing together the nation’s top female cricketers in a highly anticipated early-season showcase. From the first ball, the tournament has combined fierce competition with a sense of celebration, highlighting both the growing talent in Ugandan women’s cricket and the increasing support for the sport across the country. Three teams: Itanda Kayakers, Bujjagali Rafters, and Karuma Rapids, have battled in a series of round-robin fixtures, each match producing moments of skill, strategy, and unexpected drama.

Itanda Kayakers started the tournament strong, dominating Karuma Rapids in their opening encounter. Despite a shortened match due to time constraints, Kayakers bowled out Karuma for a modest total of 68, before chasing it down efficiently under the leadership of captain Janet Mbabazi. The team’s disciplined bowling and calm batting under pressure set the tone for their campaign and marked them as early favourites. Karuma Rapids struggled to find rhythm in subsequent matches, losing again to both Itanda and Bujjagali, highlighting the challenges of consistency and experience in high-stakes T20 cricket.

Bujjagali Rafters demonstrated resilience in their matches, overturning a tough score set by Itanda Kayakers in a thrilling chase. A key partnership between Ruth Mwanga and Devine Gabriella Nyamer guided the Rafters to victory on the last ball, showcasing composure under pressure and the kind of competitive spirit that has become a hallmark of the league. Individual performances like Kevin Awino’s steady half-century against Karuma Rapids further underscored the depth of talent in the squad, reflecting a generation of players who have trained, competed, and matured through domestic cricket programs.

As the tournament has progressed, the league has become more than just a series of matches; it has evolved into a platform for showcasing the growth of women’s cricket in Uganda. The games have drawn local fans to the ground, creating a lively atmosphere filled with energy, anticipation, and support for women athletes. For Karuma Rapids, the ongoing challenges have highlighted the importance of team cohesion and strategic adjustments, while for Itanda and Bujjagali, early successes have built momentum and confidence as the league moves toward the finals.

Beyond the scoreboard, the Women’s T20 Elite League represents a milestone in the broader development of cricket in Uganda. It reflects the investment in female talent, the emphasis on competitive structure, and the increasing recognition that women’s cricket is a vital part of the country’s sporting future. Each match has provided lessons, inspiration, and proof that with opportunity and dedication, Ugandan women cricketers can deliver both thrilling entertainment and the promise of sustained excellence on the international stage.
