The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session on 30 October 2025 to address the escalating crisis in Sudan, where the situation in El Fasher, Darfur has deteriorated into what UN officials described as a humanitarian catastrophe. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) recently seized control of the city, forcing Sudanese army units to retreat from their final stronghold in the region. Reports from the ground detail mass killings, summary executions, and house-to-house searches, painting a grim picture of widespread atrocities and civilian suffering. The urgency of the meeting reflected growing international alarm over the scale and brutality of the violence.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, delivered a stark assessment, warning that El Fasher had “descended into an even darker hell.” Her remarks were echoed by Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher, who condemned the atrocities and emphasized the moral imperative for global action. Fletcher declared that the world could no longer claim ignorance, stating, “We cannot hear the screams, but the horror is continuing.” These statements underscored the gravity of the crisis and the need for immediate intervention to halt further bloodshed and protect vulnerable populations.

The humanitarian consequences have been devastating. Thousands of civilians have fled to nearby towns such as Tawila, seeking refuge from the violence. Aid organizations report severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, with access to affected areas increasingly restricted due to ongoing hostilities. The collapse of essential services has left communities on the brink of starvation and disease, compounding the suffering of those already displaced by years of conflict. Despite these challenges, the UN continues to deliver lifesaving assistance where possible, navigating dangerous conditions to reach those in need.

In response to the crisis, the Security Council issued a press statement condemning the RSF’s assault and calling for the full implementation of Resolution 2736, which demands an end to the siege of El Fasher and urges all parties to de-escalate. Council members expressed grave concern over the risk of famine and extreme food insecurity, stressing the importance of unhindered humanitarian access and the protection of civilians. The emergency session highlighted the international community’s growing frustration with the lack of progress in resolving Sudan’s civil war and the urgent need for coordinated diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability.

As the conflict in Sudan deepens, the Security Council faces mounting pressure to take decisive action. The situation in El Fasher serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of inaction and the fragility of international mechanisms meant to safeguard peace. With the region teetering on the edge of collapse, the world watches closely, hoping that this emergency session marks a turning point in the global response to one of Africa’s most pressing humanitarian crises.
