In Guinea-Bissau, peacebuilding takes on a deeply personal dimension through the work of Christian Menin, a UN Volunteer from Brazil serving as a Project Manager for Rule of Law and Security with the United Nations Development Programme. His mission, supported by the UN Peacebuilding Fund, focuses on strengthening institutional trust and community resilience in a country grappling with organized crime, corruption, and fragile governance. Christian’s approach combines technical expertise with human connection, working closely with police and justice officials to build systems that are both effective and inclusive.
One of the most impactful aspects of his work has been the installation of solar-powered systems in remote border police posts, a move that has dramatically improved connectivity and operational safety. These upgrades not only enhance law enforcement capabilities but also symbolize a commitment to sustainable development and innovation in public service. Beyond infrastructure, Christian has helped train over 500 security officers and 300 justice operators, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights.
Christian’s dedication extends to youth engagement, where he led a 10-day camp focused on drug prevention and civic awareness. The program reached 400 young people, fostering healthy decision-making and empowering them to become agents of change in their communities. Through interactive workshops and dialogue, the camp created a space for reflection, learning, and hope, demonstrating that peace begins not with policy alone, but with people who believe in their power to shape a better future.
His story is part of a broader movement involving 47 UN Volunteers across West and Central Africa, all working to rebuild trust and promote peace from the ground up. In Guinea-Bissau, where challenges are complex and progress often slow, Christian’s work stands as a testament to the transformative potential of volunteerism. It reminds us that peace is not an abstract goal, it is a daily practice rooted in empathy, collaboration, and the unwavering belief that every person has a role to play in building a more just and secure world.
