US Lawmakers Reaffirm Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara
Rabat – A visiting delegation of US Congress members reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara during talks in Rabat on Friday, while encouraging stronger American investment in the region.
Following a meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Congressman Mike Lawler emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the southern provinces. He reiterated US support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan, calling it the most “serious and credible” solution to the dispute.
Lawler also highlighted the need for greater US economic involvement in the Sahara, stressing that development initiatives would reinforce the historic partnership between the two nations. He recalled Morocco’s early recognition of US independence in 1777 as a testament to their longstanding relationship.
Congressman Ritchie Torres echoed these sentiments, describing Morocco as Washington’s closest ally in North Africa. He noted that US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty—first formalized in December 2020 under President Donald Trump—has been consistently reaffirmed by successive administrations.
Morocco’s position on the Sahara has continued to gain traction globally, leaving the Polisario Front increasingly isolated. Backing from major international powers, including France and Spain, alongside growing calls for investment in the southern provinces, has further bolstered Rabat’s diplomatic standing.
This sustained support underscores Morocco’s territorial integrity and its role as a key partner for peace, security, and economic development in the region.
