The Zimbabwean government has launched renovations at Parirenyatwa Hospital, focusing initially on Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital and Adlam House, a student nurses’ accommodation facility. The initiative follows President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s visits to major public hospitals amid public concern over their deteriorating conditions. Health Minister Douglas Mombeshora announced that the hospital will be modernized to meet world-class standards, with upgrades to infrastructure and new medical equipment. Renovations are being carried out in phases, and preliminary assessments are underway to develop a comprehensive plan for the main hospital. While some maternity patients have been relocated to facilitate the work, the broader effort aims to transform the facility with new beds, theatre equipment, X-ray machines, and CT scanners. The move comes after years of neglect in Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, which suffers from underfunding, staff shortages, and decaying infrastructure.
