Benin is undergoing a transformative shift in its energy sector, with renewable energy, particularly solar power, emerging as a central pillar of its national development strategy. In a bold move to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and imported electricity, the government approved an updated National Renewable Energy Development Policy (PONADER) for 2020–2030. This policy outlines a clear roadmap toward achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030, aligning with Benin’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and reflecting a broader ambition to modernize its energy infrastructure.

Despite its renewable ambitions, Benin’s current energy mix remains heavily reliant on thermal sources, which account for nearly 69% of domestic power generation. Hydroelectricity contributes 16%, while solar energy makes up 15%. However, the country still imports the vast majority of its electricity, around 95% as of 2022, highlighting the urgency of expanding local generation capacity. To address this, Benin has launched several large-scale solar projects, including a flagship solar power plant in Bohicon, which is expected to significantly boost domestic supply and reduce reliance on neighboring countries.

The government’s strategy also emphasizes rural electrification, where access to electricity remains critically low. While approximately 42% of urban households are connected to the grid, only about 13% of rural homes enjoy the same access. To bridge this gap, Benin is investing in decentralized energy solutions such as mini-grids and off-grid solar systems, which offer scalable and cost-effective alternatives for remote communities. These efforts are supported by international partnerships and funding mechanisms that help overcome technical and financial barriers to renewable deployment.

Looking ahead, Benin’s energy planners are modeling future generation scenarios to meet sustainability targets by 2050. With abundant solar and biomass resources, the country has the potential to dramatically increase its renewable output while lowering costs and environmental impact. This transition not only promises greater energy security but also opens new avenues for economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards. As Benin continues to embrace clean energy, it sets a powerful example for other nations in the region, demonstrating how strategic investment and policy alignment can drive meaningful progress toward a sustainable future.
