The Gambia has officially validated a $12.17 million climate resilience initiative aimed at safeguarding vulnerable urban communities and ecosystems from the growing threats of climate change. Known as the Climate Resilient Banjul Initiative (CLIMB), the project is funded by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Environment Programme and is being implemented by the National Environment Agency. It marks a pioneering effort in Africa, focusing on large-scale urban adaptation strategies that integrate environmental sustainability with infrastructure development.
The CLIMB project is designed to transform the urban landscape of Greater Banjul through ecosystem-based adaptation, improved urban planning, and the development of sustainable infrastructure. It will embed climate resilience into urban laws and policies, restore critical wetlands and mangrove ecosystems, and enhance early warning systems to better prepare communities for climate-related disasters. Officials have highlighted the urgency of the initiative, noting that climate-induced damage currently consumes nearly a quarter of The Gambia’s annual road maintenance budget, underscoring the economic toll of environmental degradation.
Dr. Dawda Badjie, Executive Director of the National Environment Agency, described the project as a benchmark for the continent, emphasizing the importance of seizing this opportunity to lead in climate adaptation. He stressed that the initiative is not only about protecting infrastructure but also about empowering communities to withstand and recover from climate shocks. The project aligns closely with The Gambia’s national climate policy and its ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 49.7% by 2030, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
By validating the CLIMB initiative, The Gambia is taking a bold step toward building urban resilience and setting a precedent for other African nations facing similar climate challenges.
