Kampala, Uganda | July 2025 — The Government of Uganda has officially launched the long-anticipated upgrade of the 72.5-kilometre Entebbe–Mpigi road, a strategic project aimed at easing traffic congestion, enhancing regional mobility, and boosting economic growth across the central corridor.
The project, which is being implemented by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) under the Ministry of Works and Transport, will involve the expansion and rehabilitation of the existing road connecting Entebbe, Wakiso, and Mpigi districts. These districts are critical to both domestic connectivity and international access, as the road leads directly to Entebbe International Airport—the country’s primary air gateway.
Modern Infrastructure for a Growing Economy
According to UNRA, the road upgrade will include:
- Widening of the existing carriageway
- Construction of modern drainage systems
- Building interchanges at key junctions
- Improved safety features for pedestrians and cyclists
The road will be designed to meet international highway standards, ensuring smoother traffic flow and safer travel for both cargo and passenger vehicles. Once completed, the road is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Entebbe and Mpigi, improve access to surrounding communities, and support Uganda’s growing tourism, trade, and logistics sectors.
“This is not just a road project—it is a key investment in Uganda’s economic future,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Works and Transport. “The Entebbe–Mpigi corridor is vital for international connectivity, especially given its link to the airport, and its improvement will benefit millions of road users annually.”

Project Funding and Timeline
The Shs multi-billion road project is being financed through a mix of government budget allocations and external concessional funding, part of Uganda’s broader commitment to infrastructure development under Vision 2040.
Construction is expected to take approximately 36 months, with phased works to minimize disruption to existing traffic. UNRA has pledged to provide regular public updates on progress and traffic management plans throughout the project cycle.
Community Support and Expectations
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the development, expressing optimism about improved transportation, job creation during the construction phase, and increased land value in nearby communities. They have, however, called for timely compensation for persons affected by the road works and strict adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
The Entebbe–Mpigi road upgrade is one of several strategic infrastructure projects currently underway across the country as Uganda accelerates efforts to modernize its road network and support economic transformation.
Editor’s Note: The Entebbe–Mpigi Expressway complements other major infrastructure initiatives like the Kampala Flyover Project and the Kampala–Jinja Expressway, all aimed at decongesting the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and improving Uganda’s transport resilience.
