Severe flooding in Ayod County, Jonglei State, has displaced around 50,000 people, leaving residents in desperate need of food, shelter, and medical care. The crisis, caused by heavy rains and an overflowing river, has worsened an already dire situation in the region.
According to local officials, the floods have displaced large numbers of people across several areas in Ayod County. Commissioner James Chuol Jiek reported that communities in Gog Payam, Pagil, Wau, Khorwai, Pajiek, Kwachdeng, and Ayod town have been severely impacted. The situation is particularly dire in Ayod Payam, where nearly 9,000 people have been forced from their homes. In total, approximately 50,000 individuals are affected by the flooding, many of whom are living in makeshift shelters with limited access to basic necessities like food, clean water, and medical supplies.
Residents of the flooded areas are voicing their concerns about the worsening conditions. Nyajime Kuol, a resident of Ayod town, shared her distress: "We are suffering. We lack food and shelter. Our children and elderly are getting sick from the stagnant water. We appeal for support." Local health and sanitation concerns have been exacerbated by the standing floodwaters, which have led to rising illness, particularly among vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
Kwach Deng, County Coordinator for the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), has called on humanitarian organizations to step in. “The situation is dire. These fresh floods are worsening an already difficult situation. As the RRC, we are engaging with our partners to pool resources and respond to the crisis,” Deng said. Authorities are urging both local and international agencies to respond swiftly to prevent further suffering and to provide essential aid. Food, water, shelter, and medical assistance are critical in helping the displaced communities rebuild their lives.
The humanitarian crisis in Ayod County demands immediate attention. Relief agencies and concerned citizens can play a crucial role in providing the necessary support to those affected. Donations, volunteer efforts, and increased international cooperation can make a meaningful impact during this challenging time. Support efforts to help those displaced in Ayod County by contributing to relief organizations and raising awareness about the crisis. Together, we can make a difference.
