Lesotho has taken a decisive step in its public health strategy by launching the National Multi-sectoral NCDIs Coordinating Mechanism, a platform designed to tackle the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs). Spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and supported by the World Health Organization, the NCDI Poverty Network, and other partners, the initiative was formally introduced during a high-level event in Maseru on September 18, 2025. This mechanism represents a unified approach to addressing chronic health conditions that have increasingly strained the country’s healthcare system and contributed to nearly half of all deaths nationwide.

The coordinating mechanism brings together stakeholders from across government ministries, civil society, development agencies, and the private sector to align efforts and implement impactful interventions. Its focus spans a wide range of conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, mental health disorders, and injuries—many of which are linked to preventable risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. By fostering collaboration and shared responsibility, the platform aims to streamline resources, improve service delivery, and promote healthier lifestyles across communities.

Health Minister Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane underscored the urgency of the initiative, citing the country’s rising NCDI rates and the need for a robust, coordinated response. He highlighted recent milestones, including the construction of the Starlight Oasis of Hope Cancer Centre, Lesotho’s first palliative care facility, and the rollout of a comprehensive NCD package at the primary healthcare level. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to strengthening the health system and ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations have access to quality care.

The launch was met with praise from international partners, including WHO Representative Dr. Innocent Nuwagira, who emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration and strategic planning. He noted that the mechanism not only addresses immediate health challenges but also lays the groundwork for long-term resilience and equity in healthcare. As Lesotho moves forward, the success of this initiative will depend on continued engagement, adequate funding, and the integration of NCDI prevention into national development priorities. The mechanism stands as a promising model for other nations grappling with similar health burdens, offering a blueprint for inclusive and effective public health governance.
